By Marc Correnti

Labor Day is over which mean summer is officially in the rearview mirror. That statement also could best describe the fate of some of the Stateline football teams following Week 2. Obviously, teams like Brodhead/Juda, Hononegah, Big Foot, North Boone, Beloit Memorial, South Beloit and Parkview helped themselves. But there was the other side of the coin where Beloit Turner took a giant... »

Stateline Preps: Indians display quiet confidence

Watching the Hononegah volleyball team in Tuesday night's NIC-10 opener against Harlem, there was something that seemed like arrogance on the part of the Indians. But, it wasn't that. It was a quiet confidence that says, "We know we're talented and we can beat anyone on any given night if we play up to our standards." In not so many words, first-year Hononegah... »

Stateline Preps: Meet Aaron Jones, cross country runner

By Marc Correnti
Aaron Jones

Looking closely at the Beloit Turner cross country roster, everything looks in order until you get to the eighth name down on the list. That name says, "Aaron Jones, 6-2, 205 pounds." The first thought is that's a pretty big kid for cross country, especially considering the next heaviest runner weighs 170 pounds. But Jones is something of a mystery for cross country. Jones... »

Stateline Preps: Any football sleepers?

By Marc Correnti
Beloit Turner running back Nolan Byrom will be a big part of Turner's playoff hopes.

The best way to describe the football contenders in the Stateline would have to be Usual Suspects. Of course, there's Big Foot, Brodhead/Juda and Hononegah. Those are the three teams that figure to contend in their conferences. That's been the case over the past few years and it really shouldn't surprise anyone. But, then there's the teams that are somewhat flying under the... »

Stateline Preps: Why so serious?

By Marc Correnti
new gordon

There's always something interesting that happens on "Photo Day" for the prep football teams. While preparing to shoot individual head shots for each team, the scene is usually similar to any other scene before the photo shoot actually begins. Goofing around. That's to be expected when you have a group of 15-18-year-olds unwinding from a long, grueling practice. But then something happens out of... »

Brodhead sophomore standout J.J. Panoske has formally received an offer to play basketball at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, according to Wissports.net. The 6-9 sophomore took part in an open gym workout at the high school with coaches from UWGB watching. Apparently, the workout went well as Panoske received a scholarship offer from the Division I school. This could be a great step... »

David Brown takes a risk

By Marc Correnti
David Brown will take his skills from the basketball court to track.

When Sports Editor Jim Franz and I looked at the Hononegah boys track results from Tuesday's meet against Belvidere North a familiar name appeared in the boxscore. David Brown. That's right the 3-time NIC-10 boys basketball player of the year traded in the Air Jordans for Usain Bolts. Brown was competing in the triple jump and long jump, winning the long jump with... »
