Discovering good reads
Four years ago, when I was home from college for summer break and needed a job, I applied to a bookstore.
It seemed like a good fit. I like to read. I like books.
During the interview though, a question stumped me: What books or authors did I like?
By that time I had phased out of my dedication to teen series and usually only had time to read required reading for school.
I had no idea what authors were popular or how to find new series I would like.
Since then, I have discovered Jennifer Weiner, Jodi Picoult, Sue Grafton, Stephenie Meyer (OK, yes, a teen author), and Chris Bohjalian.
My literary discoveries also include single titles from other authors, such as Sara Gruen’s “Water for Elephants,” “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safran Foer, and “The Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold.
While I stumbled upon some of these authors and titles on my own by browsing bookstores and BookMooch, many were recommendations from coworkers.
Although a recent BookMooching spree has fattened my To Be Read inventory to last me well through the end of the year, I’m always looking for authors and titles to try.
Any recommendations?
