David Brown takes a risk

By Marc Correnti

When Sports Editor Jim Franz and I looked at the Hononegah boys track results from Tuesday’s meet against Belvidere North a familiar name appeared in the boxscore.

David Brown.

That’s right the 3-time NIC-10 boys basketball player of the year traded in the Air Jordans for Usain Bolts.

Brown was competing in the triple jump and long jump, winning the long jump with a leap of 18 feet.

The first thing that came to mind was: Is he crazy?

Brown is coming off an injury-plagued basketball season in which he suffered an ankle injury, foot injury, back injury and hand injury.

Now would seem to be the good time to take a vacation before he goes to Western Michigan University on a basketball scholarship.

There’s all sorts of risks Brown is taking with his future. He could land wrong on a jump and blow out his knee. He could do more damage to the injuries that were already lingering.

I’m not here to say Brown shouldn’t go out for track. Brown can do whatever he wants with his life, but I’d just like to add that he’s taking a big chance. That’s all.

I commend Brown for his school spirit for competing in track. I hope everything works out for him.

David Brown will take his skills from the basketball court to track.

    Marc:
There should be a concern for Daivd’s health and it is something we do not overlook. I am a big believer in the three-sport athlete. We are very fortunate at Hononegah to have so many boys who are multi-sport athletes. This, I believe, is the basis for a sound athletic program at the high school level. Many college coaches prefer the multiple sport athlete over the one who decides to concentrate on just one sport. Could David injure himself? Sure, but he opens himself to injury everytime he takes the court for a pickup game of basketball, especially when that game is not within a controlled environment. If David had not come out, this would not have hurt our track program.

Coach, I agree with everything you said. I’m just saying it’s a risk. You’re right about him getting hurt in any kind of environment. Here’s hoping he stays healthy.
